Late night craving
Every once in awhile I get a huge craving for this salad – usually at around 10pm. It rates the highest star power on my list of favorite recipes. Thai noodle salad Ingredients: 12 to 15 ounces dried chukka soba noodles (also called “chow mein” noodles) 1 1/2 teaspoons dark sesame oil 1/3 cup rice vinegar Juice and grated peel of one lime 1/2 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons sugar 1-2...

Chocolate frosting on a Saltine cracker
This is such a nostalgia hit for me. When I was growing up, if there was still frosting to spare after the beaters and bowl were licked clean and the cake got its share, we would enjoy it later spread on a saltine cracker. The creamy sweetness of the frosting combined with the crunchy saltiness of the cracker was the only reason we needed to love it. However I think the real mother of this...

This was my breakfast
It was part of my dinner last night, too. Unconventional? Yeah, I know, but I couldn’t help it. So there I sat in the in the wind, and chilly 38 degrees F. sunshine, loving every bite. I’ve been making Texas Rice for years. You can see it’s the side in my oven-crisp...

Shrimp in grapefruit
This simple, incredible salad is a classic. The recipe was created by Irma Rombauer, a St. Louis widow who self-published “Joy of Cooking” in 1931 to support her family. Some argue that this fresh salad, from Rombauer’s first edition, is more American and more important than the more famous shrimp cocktail. I served it with a crusty loaf of warm garlic bread, and not a single...

Love it, love it, love it.
I woke up this morning and was sorry we didn’t have leftovers from last night. This is such a great recipe, and it’s perfect as is, but it’s easy to play with, too. It’s yummy with fresh tomatoes and cilantro. Or wrap it up in a warm flour tortilla with some crisp lettuce, grated cheese and a little sour cream. The good news is that it takes only 20 minutes to cook, so I’m only about a half an...
