Hummus
I’m pretty sure I was making hummus before hummus was cool.  A friend of mine gave me a cookbook over 20 years ago that included a recipe for it, and even though I had never heard of hummus at the time, it sounded delicious. If you make it yourself you can control the amount of fresh lemon juice (I like my lemony), and use your own good olive oil. It’s great served with chips and raw...

Make this. It's amazing.
My mother visited us over Thanksgiving and was generous beyond belief. One of the nicest things she gave me was a large bag of fresh-picked rosemary from Arizona. This redolent bread is one of my favorite ways to take advantage of it. I use my bread machine to knead the dough, but obviously you wouldn’t need to. Rosemary Focaccia Bread Ingredients: 1 cup warm water 1/4 cup minced onion 3...

Random thoughts from tango mango
An apology for the lapse. To the unknown number of you who actually read my blog, I apologize for my break in posting. I made a commitment early on that I would post to my blog every day. However I’ve found that if posting meant compromising quality or missing out on significant time with my family and friends just for the sake of fulfilling this commitment, I needed to reexamine my priorities....

Real men eat quiche
In 1982, American author Bruce Feinstein wrote the best-selling book, Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche. The book’s humor is derived from the confusion of how middle-class men should behave. Following the feminist movement, some thought that a “real” man should be served bacon and eggs by a woman, but would not (or should not) be making it into a pie, serving it to himself and then cleaning up...

Celebrate fall with a pumpkin-inspired dish
There are months that go by when I’m not inspired to try a single dish from the cooking magazines I subscribe to. This is not one of those months. One page after another tempts me with goodies such as nut tarts, puff pastry enveloped brie cheese, candied mandarin oranges with cranberries, a puree of parsnips and potatoes, roast turkey, and stuffing with pecans and wild rice. When I read this...

Saturday morning comfort food
I wish I could bottle up and send you the scent this glorious cake gives off while it’s baking. At this moment, our snug little house smells like your favorite bakery. And with a little bit of rain coming down outside and coffee brewing, I’m as happy as can be. Blueberry Sour Cream Coffeecake Ingredients: 1 cup butter, softened 2 cups white sugar 2 eggs 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla...

I love to cook
A little bit about me and my love of cooking… I know I’m a pretty good cook, and I’m fairly certain I’ve cooked more homemade meals for my family than the average family is accustomed to eating. Surely this is because of my upbringing, as I was surrounded by good food and good cooks while growing up. My mom had a knack for cooking and she enjoyed it. Homemade noodles, chicken tetrazzini, lasagna,...
